1,000 Jews demand justice for Ilan Halimi

More than 1,000 Jews marched in the streets of Paris on Sunday, demanding justice for Ilan Halimi, the 23-year-old Jewish man who was abducted, tortured and killed near Paris by an organised and dangerous gang last week.

Information on the demonstration circulated within the Jewish community through mobile phone and e-mail messages, although the spontaneous gathering failed to get support from any Jewish organizations.

Marchers walked down Voltaire Boulevard, past the mobile-phone store where Ilan Halimi used to work and where was approached by his killers a month ago.

During the protest young demonstrators shouted "Justice for Ilan", "revenge of Ilan", "Fofana murderer", a reference to Youssef Fofana, the head of the gang who is still at large.

Jews from every age and background participated in the walk under heavy rain.

Many of them were holding leaflets with Ilan Halimi's picture, the only
photography the Halimi family accepted to give out to the press, and only to Jewish and Israeli media.

Police blamed for incidents

A few incidents occurred at the end of the gathering. A driver forced his way through the demonstrators and was chased down by dozens of young men who damaged the vehicle.

The police were blamed because it didn't prevent cars from circulating down the Boulevard.

A member of the Lubavitch community addressed the crowd with a loud speaker and said "We are being mocked. Nobody takes us seriously. How much longer is this going to last? May the Messiah arrive soon."

The crowd ended its tribute to Ilan Halimi by saying the Kaddish prayer and observing a minute of silence in front of the mobile phone store where he used to work.

While until now three of the 13 people arrested have been indicted, French police were still hunting for Youssef Fofana, a 26-yar-old black African man, considered as the mastermind of the kidnapping ring suspected of using charming women to lure Ilan Halimi to his death.

Fofana, who nicknames himself "Brain of Barbarians, is described as "extremely dangerous."

The gang is suspected of abducting the 23-year-old Parisian, and
subjecting him to horrific tortures before dumping his naked and mutilated body in the street near a suburban train station last Monday.

Handcuffed, gagged and covered in burns and torture marks, he died on the way to hospital.

Twelve suspects, aged 17 to 32, were held in overnight raids in the south Paris suburbs, most on a housing estate in Bagneux, while a 13th was arrested in Belgium, Paris state prosecutor Jean-Claude Marin told a press conference on Friday.

Beautiful bait

Halimi went missing in late January after agreeing to a date with an
unknown woman who approached him at his workplace.

Using beautiful women as "bait", the gang are thought to have attempted six or seven other botched kidnappings, Marin said.

Halimi's abduction has sent a shockwave through France's Jewish community, since Halimi and several other targets were Jewish, leading France's Jewish community umbrella group, the CRIF, to issue an appeal for calm and caution on Friday.

Uneasiness

But "uneasiness" was perceptible in the Paris synagogues over Shabbat, according to informed sources.

On the eve of the annual CRIF dinner, which reunites the main French political leaders and Jewish community dignitaries on Monday night, many Jews are expecting that they pay tribute to the memory of Ilan Halimi.

Jewish organizations have called for another demonstration next Sunday in the Paris suburb city of Bagneux where Ilan Halimi was detained and tortured by his kidnappers.

"We call on Jews and non-Jews to come and meditate on the place where such unacceptable atrocities happened. When cruelty reaches such high level, we must say enough," says an e-mail circulating within the Jewish community.

"We will ask that a memorial plaque be set on the place where he was tortured to death because he was a Jew," it added.

ABIDJAN/PARIJS - Het 'brein der barbaren' bekent een van de gruwelijkste moorden uit de Franse criminele geschiedenis..

De 25-jarige Youssouf F., die zichzelf het Brein van de Barbaren heeft genoemd, is in Ivoorkust aangehouden op verdenking van de moord op en marteling van een 23-jarige joodse Parijzenaar, Ilan Halimi.

F. heeft echter stellig ontkend dat antisemitisme een rol speelde bij het plegen van de misdaden, aldus een zegsman van de politie van Ivoorkust. Naar verwachting wordt F. snel aan Frankrijk uitgeleverd.

Halimi werd 13 februari stervende aan zijn verwondingen aangetroffen langs een spoorlijn in de Parijse voorstad Sainte-Geneviève-Des-Bois. Hij werd 21 januari meegelokt door een jonge vrouw, ontvoerd en wekenlang door een bende jonge misdadigers gemarteld in de voorstad Bagneux, net als Sainte-Geneviève even ten zuiden van de stad.

F. geldt als de bendeleider die mogelijk racistische motieven had voor de gruwelijke martelingen van het slachtoffer. Dat heeft in Frankrijk tot grote commotie geleid. Het zou een antisemitistische misdaad zijn.

Donderdagavond komen talrijke mensen onder wie prominente politici bijeen in en wegens de verwachte opkomst waarschijnlijk ook voor de grote syanagoge van Parijs in het centrale 9e arrondissement. Het komend weekeinde loopt waarschijnlijk de Franse president Chirac zelf mee in een betoging tegen racisme en antisemitisme naar aanleiding van deze misdaad.

De representatieve Raad van Joodse Instellingen in Frankrijk (CRIF) heeft tot de bijeenkomst op zondag opgeroepen. De CRIF slaagde er in 1990 al eens in een Franse president in persoon op het betogerspad te krijgen. François Mitterrand liep toen mee met een betoging tegen antisemtisme naar aanlaiding van vandalisme op de joodse begraafplaats in het Zuid-Franse Carpantras.

F. ontkent dat antisemitisme iets met de misdaad te maken had. De bende heeft meerdere keren mensen ontvoerd of gepoogd te ontvoeren om geld af te persen. Een van de jonge vrouwen die als lokaas dienden, meldde zich afgelopen week vrijwillig bij de politie. Daarmee kon die de bende verrassend eenvoudig oprollen.

Vooralsnog zijn dertien mensen in de leeftijd van 17 tot 32 jaar in verband met deze zaak aangehouden. (ANP/AFP)

Meurtre d'Ilan: l'enquête se poursuit, le chef présumé toujours en fuite

PARIS (AFP) - l Les mises en examen de suspects dans l'enquête sur le gang soupçonné d'avoir enlevé et tué Ilan Halimi, 23 ans, devaient se poursuivre lundi soir, alors que le chef présumé de la bande était toujours en fuite.

Sept personnes au total devaient être présentées à la juge d'instruction parisienne Corinne Goetzmann, après trois premières samedi. Le chef présumé de la bande, qui se fait appeler "the brain of barbarians" ("cerveau des barbares"), 25 ans, était toujours activement recherché lundi par les policiers de la brigade criminelle parisienne en charge de l'enquête. En outre, deux autres personnes étaient toujours en garde à vue lundi, selon une source judiciaire. Hormis le chef présumé, au moins deux autres personnes, son bras droit de 22 ans, ainsi qu'une femme soupçonnée d'avoir séduit des victimes, sont toujours recherchées, selon des sources proches du dossier. A ce jour, selon les enquêteurs, sept personnes, dont Ilan Halimi, ont été prises pour cibles par ces malfaiteurs, dans diverses tentatives d'enlèvement pour leur extorquer de l'argent. Michael, également de religion juive, dont l'identité a été confirmée de source policière, a raconté comment il avait été lui aussi victime début janvier d'une tentative d'enlèvement et violemment agressé par des membres présumés du gang, en banlieue parisienne. L'hypothèse de motivations à caractère antisémite provoque depuis la semaine dernière un émoi dans la communauté juive de Paris. De jeunes juifs ont été à l'origine de débordements, lors de la manifestation de dimanche à la mémoire d'Ilan. Interrogée par le quotidien israélien Haaretz, la mère d'Ilan, Ruth Halimi, a déclaré que "si Ilan n'avait pas été juif, il n'aurait pas été assassiné", en accusant la police française d'ignorer le caractère antisémite des faits. L'Union des étudiants juifs de France (UEJF) a réclamé lundi "que toute la lumière soit faite sur le meurtre d'Ilan Halimi" Selon les enquêteurs et le parquet, d'autres victimes n'étaient pas juives et le but premier des ravisseurs était d'obtenir de l'argent. Toutefois, la justice n'exclut pas de retenir la circonstance aggravante "d'antisémitisme" pour certains suspects, en fonction de leurs déclarations. Les ravisseurs ont réclamé à la famille 450.000 euros dans un premier temps, la somme étant rabaissée plusieurs fois lors d'échanges téléphoniques entre la famille et les ravisseurs, descendant jusqu'à 5.000 euros. Selon une source judiciaire, la famille allait toucher un héritage substantiel. Les enquêteurs travaillent également sur un lien éventuel entre ce gang et des tentatives d'extorsion sur des médecins parisiens en 2005, a précisé une source judiciaire. Samedi, trois personnes, dont deux femmes, ont été mises en examen par Mme Goetzmann. Audrey Lorleach, 24 ans, est notamment poursuivie pour "complicité de tentative d'enlèvement". La jeune femme, qui s'est livrée à la police jeudi, a tenté d'attirer deux victimes en les séduisant. La justice reproche à son amie Murielle Izouard, 24 ans, de ne pas avoir dénoncé les faits. Almane Diallo, qui aurait pu servir d'intermédiaire pour une éventuelle rançon, est également mis en examen. Ils ont tous trois été incarcérés. Ilan Halimi avait été enlevé le 21 janvier. Il a été découvert trois semaines plus tard agonisant à Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois (Essonne). Une grande partie de son corps portait des traces de tortures. Selon une source policière, les personnes mises en cause dans ce dossier sont des "amateurs", mais dangereux", des "gars et filles de cités" qui "sont soudés" et "ne réalisent pas tous la gravité des faits".
